The Management Effectiveness for Marine Protected Areas Online Course is designed for MPA managers and staff who are moving beyond area designation and focusing on management effectiveness. Participants will gain foundational knowledge on what makes an MPA truly effective and learn how to assess management effectiveness. Participants will also learn ways to adapt management to improve the likelihood of achieving real conservation outcomes.

Build foundational ecological knowledge progressively to applied management, monitoring, and evaluation with each unit that combines conceptual learning with interactive visuals.

This course equips marine practitioners in the Coral Triangle with essential frameworks for evaluating and improving area-based management. From foundational concepts — what Marine Managed Areas are and why they matter — to practical tools for assessing management effectiveness, participants explore real-world examples, key success factors, and adaptive management approaches. Aligned with CTI-CFF RPOA 2.0, the course recognizes that effectiveness is shaped not only by biological outcomes but by governance strength, local context, and the quality of human engagement.

Introduces Community-Based Coastal Resources Management (CBCRM), an approach that empowers coastal and indigenous communities in managing coastal resources sustainably. Designed for practitioners, facilitators, local government officers, and field staff, the course provides foundational concepts and practical tools informed by experiences across the Coral Triangle region.

Introduces OECMs in the Coral Triangle, translating global guidance into practical regional applications for communities, managers, NGOs, cooperatives, and academics across the CT6 countries.
